Let’s play a game.
You just bought a muffin from a bakery counter. It was $4.39…
Would you like to leave a tip of 15%? 20%? 30%?
Here’s what happens if you lose: the lovely woman who works here will think you’re a cheap asshole. Forever. You’ll never be able to show your miserly face here again.
…Go.
Don’t try to do any math! There’s no time. A wealthier, more generous-looking person is behind you in line. And they’re looking over your shoulder! You’d better think quick.
You could just press the NO TIP button. Would the clerk really notice? (Yes.)
But does she even deserve a tip for putting a muffin on a plate? After all, you’re the one walking it over to your table, and you’re the one who will put the plate in a gray bin labeled DiRtY DiShEs :-) when you’re finished.
But does she clean the dirty dishes bin?? Hurry now, the clock is ticking.
Maybe you can just leave a dollar! A dollar always works — but then you have to hit CUSTOM TIP — and she’ll probably think that means you don’t want to leave 30% — which you don’t — but that’s beside the point, isn’t it?!
You should have just brought cash. That would have been easier… except some places don’t even take cash these days.
My, my, my. Quite a painful conundrum.
OH NO! SHE SIGHED! Was it at you? Or does she just hate her job? Does she hate her job because of you?
Screw it. Choose 30%. That’s around a dollar, probably. You’ll feel good about it later.
…
Ah damn, she looked away right when you pressed the button!
Better luck next time… or the time after that… or the time after that…
I’m a tip giver, I have to leave a tip or I feel awful!! But sometimes it’s not necessary too. In the case of the muffin and carrying it to your table yourself and throwing away the trash. I’m sure you don’t have to worry about a tip!!
A game that you can’t win
