With Halloween nearly upon us, it’s finally that magical time of year when you can wander around cemeteries without causing a wellness check.

The eagle-eyed among us have probably noticed that gravestones are often carved with curious symbols. The common ones are easy enough to explain: a butterfly represents the soul, a lily means innocence, an eagle denotes military service. But some symbols are more obscure.

Here’s a brief guide to the ones you’re less likely to find.

  • Pillowcase: Symbolizes eternal rest.

  • Gallbladder: Deceased is in Purgatory.

  • Thumbs-up: Foul play was ruled out.
