The days of going to one reliable source for your music reviews are long gone. It’s not enough to just look at Rolling Stone or Pitchfork, because it’s hard to tell the difference between what’s written by a 20-year-old intern and what’s written by a 20-year-old intern using ChatGPT. (Those are the only two possibilities.)

As a result, many of us turn to unknown blogs or even community reviews on the sites where we purchase or listen to music. These may not always be authoritative, but they do usually contain clear tip-offs about quality, like the examples below.

RED FLAG ALBUM REVIEWS

Do not buy an album if you read a review containing ANY of the following phrases:

  • "Recorded live at Woodstock—though not the famous one in upstate New York."

  • "Perhaps the only rap album with songs praising FBI Director Kash Patel."

I'm a lifelong resident of the L.A. area, and wrote regularly for MAD magazine for over 20 years. I also have sitcom screenwriting credits, but that's for public access. You wouldn't have much interest in that, would you?
