10 Perks to Wildfire Smoke

Millions of people across North America have been forced to deal with smoky fallout from raging Canadian wildfires in recent days. This has led to severely unhealthy air quality in multiple major cities, with local leaders urging residents to stay indoors until the smoke passes.

While this type of air pollution is somewhat unusual for other parts of America, as a California resident I have plenty of experience with wildfire smoke. It comes to us annually. We greet it like an acid flashback: the sky turns yellow, then we go about our day.

You can always spot newcomers to the wildfire experience because they’re “concerned” about “health.” What these worrywarts don’t realize is that there are actually many pros to living with ever-present smoke. You simply have to make lemonade from lemons — provided your lemon tree has not yet been choked to death by ash.
